Cardio is the key to staying strong and energetic. So, how should you get started? The answer is simple: slowly. Start with a ten minute cardio workout twice a day and build up to a tempo that keeps you challenged, but doesn’t leave you completely burned out or fatigued.
A few types of cardio activities that can be beneficial include:
- Walking: Walking is the perfect way to ease into a more regular cardio routine and is easy on the joints.
- Cycling: Another low-impact form of exercise, cycling is ideal for those who want to increase their leg strength, but can’t run or engage in other high-impact sports due to osteoporosis or joint issues.
- Swimming: Swimming is a great way to increase your cardiovascular fitness while also strengthening your muscles. It does both of these things while putting minimal stress on your bones and joints.
- Aerobic classes: Group exercise isn’t just a fantastic way to break a sweat; you’ll also have tons of fun and make new friends along the way! This is hugely important when it comes to making exercise a habit.
Strength and power training: Strength and power training can help build or maintain your muscle mass by performing repetitive motion using light weights. External resistance from elastic bands also can be used to achieve results. Strength training helps prevent loss of bone mass and improves balance as you age.
Flexibility: Flexibility helps your body achieve a full range of motion. To improve flexibility, we recommend performing stationary stretches such as the ones learned in a yoga class. Balance: Having proper balance improves your posture and reduces the risk of falling. To improve balance, you have to strengthen your core and the proprioceptors in your feet and muscles dictating position.
