The American Chiropractic Association (ACA) reports that 14% of patients visit chiropractors for headache treatment. Additionally, chiropractic care has been proven to alleviate pain in tension headaches and headaches that begin in the neck, and there is growing evidence that it is also effective in treating migraines and cluster headaches.
Most people use pain medication that only masks the symptoms and doesn’t address the underlining cause of headache pain. The good news is there are ways to both prevent and treat frequent headaches using chiropractic care.
Different Types of Headaches
There are many types of headaches, including:
- Tension: A mild to moderate pain in your head that’s often described as feeling like a tight band.
- Cervicogenic: Pain perceived in the head that originates from a source in the neck.
- Migraines: A headache of varying intensity, often accompanied by nausea and sensitivity to light and sound.
- Cluster headaches: A series of relatively short but extremely painful headaches that occur day for weeks or months at a time.
What Causes Headaches?
Headaches can have a number of causes, including over activity or problems with pain-sensitive structures in the brain.
For instance, nerves, joints and muscles can cause headaches. They can even be triggered by certain foods and even lifestyle factors like:
- Alcohol (especially red wine)
- Certain foods (i.e. processed meats)
- Lack of sleep
- Poor posture
- Missed meals
- Excessive stress
Headaches can also be caused by head or neck pain. As stated above, this type of headache is referred to as cervicogenic, meaning originating from the cervical spine and/or surrounding structures. This includes irritation and/or dysfunction of the cervical spine joints which can result in head pain. Treating joint dysfunction can help relieve headache pain and restore proper function.
How Goodyear Chiropractic Health Center Can Help
At Goodyear Chiropractic Health Center, one of our chiropractic specialists will perform a comprehensive history and examination to determine whether your symptoms are coming from spinal joint dysfunction or from other surrounding structures, like muscles. We will also rule-out other possible causes and will refer you to appropriate medical professionals if we think you need additional testing or care.
By performing a thorough history, your Goodyear chiropractor may also be able to determine if any lifestyles factors (e.g., diet, alcohol, or stress) may be the cause of your frequent headaches.
Following the testing, we will discuss treatment options with you and answer any questions you may have. Treatment options may include spinal manipulation or mobilization, soft tissue therapy, and other modalities. Additionally, exercise may be prescribed to help correct your posture.
