Benefits of Chiropractic Care for Seniors

Benefits of Chiropractic Care for Seniors

If there is a special senior in your life that is struggling with pain, discomfort, immobility or other issues inhibiting their ability to live life fully, then it may be time for them to visit a chiropractor. Many seniors are unaware of the benefits that are possible through regular chiropractic care!

Some of these benefits include:

1. Pain Relief

Elderly individuals who experience pain and discomfort in their neck, spine, back or joints can greatly benefit from chiropractic care. Back pain in elderly patients is often a result of osteoarthritis or spinal compression fractures. As you age, bone density decreases, which can cause fractures to the bones overtime. If your back is not aligned, it places increased pressure on vertebrae and can increase your risk of a fracture.

Chiropractors can help ease the pain from osteoarthritis by using spinal manipulation and massage therapy techniques.

2. Better Range of Motion

In 2001, an Australian study proved that regular chiropractic adjustments can increase range of motion. As patients age, helping them maintain their flexibility and range of motion can lead to a better quality of life.

For some, an increased range of motion means being able to bend down to pick up grandchildren. For others, it means gardening without pain.

Routine chiropractic care allows seniors the ability to continue doing the things they enjoy without severe pain or discomfort.

3. Increased Coordination

Small receptors at the base of the cervical spine help your brain understand how your limbs function. As you age, these receptors don’t function as efficiently as before, making it difficult to understand how your body moves. This results in more falls, poor balance and difficulty getting up or walking.

Injuries due to falling are extremely common in the elderly population. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), falls are responsible for 90% of bone fractures that occur annually among Americans past the age of 65. Chiropractors reduce the risk of falls and improve coordination by stimulating the receptors to increase their effectiveness.

4. Increased Health

When your spine is properly aligned, it increases circulation and helps clean out bodily toxins. Alignment also allows your brain to monitor and repair the body more effectively. One study showed a 200% increase in immune system function for adults who regularly saw a chiropractor over the course of 5 years.

5. Less Chance of Being Put in a Nursing Home

Dr. Ian Coulter studied the effects of regular chiropractic care among elderly populations in 1996.

The key points he noted in this study were:

  • 44% of those who used chiropractic care reported having arthritis compared with 66% in the non-chiropractic care group
  • Those who used chiropractic care were more likely to do strenuous levels of exercise
  • Those who used chiropractic care were much less likely to move to a nursing home (5% of those who had chiropractic care vs. 48% of those who did not)

If there is an elderly individual in your life that you believe could benefit from this type of care, please encourage them to visit a chiropractor. Dedicated care from a chiropractor may be just what they need to get back the quality of life that they deserve. For more information or to schedule an appointment, call 414-332-6001!
